Policies and Guidelines: Noise

Noise Policy

The LIU Brooklyn Library strives to provide a welcoming environment that is conducive to a variety of study needs. These guidelines were developed in response to input from students and faculty regarding noise levels in various areas of the library. Noise should be kept to a minimum throughout the library. All library employees are authorized to resolve any noise complaints. Any behavior issues will be immediately referred to Public Safety. Since the library’s facilities and space are designed for students, faculty and staff use, children must be under an adult’s supervision at all times. All students and visitors are asked to be respectful and considerate of others.

Quiet Study Areas

There are designated Quiet Study Areas in the library. No conversation is permitted within these areas.

  • Quiet Room (Reference Room, LLC 308-1)
  • Study Carrels (Reference Room, LLC 308)
  • Circulation Reading Areas (Circulation Stacks, LLC 538)

Group Study Areas

Group study is permitted in all places that are not Quiet Study Areas.  However, conversations should be kept at a low volume.

Cellphone Use

Cellphones should be turned off or set to silent in all areas of the library.

If you must use your cellphone to make or receive calls, please use the following cellphone-friendly areas. Please keep your conversation brief and at a low volume:

  • Outside the Library’s main entrance on the third floor
  • Outside the elevator banks at the fourth floor entrance
  • Outside the Circulation Department at the fifth floor entrance
