Brooklyn Periodicals Department: OPEN ACCESS

INFORMATION ON OPEN ACCESS

What is Open Access?
By Open Access, we mean the free, immediate, availability on the public Internet of those works which scholars give to the world without expectation of payment–permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software or use them for any other lawful purpose.

Why is Open Access Important for Students?
All students, regardless of their institution’s ability to afford subscriptions, should have access to the full scholarly record, whether for assigned reading, research for a term paper, or literature review for a dissertation.
Why is Open Access Important for Faculty/Authors?
In agreeing to publish an article in a peer-reviewed journal, an author must retain key rights in order to legally be able to post that article on his or her personal website or to submit to an open repository. Signing a traditional publishing agreement may mean giving those rights away. Learn more about retaining rights and the tools that are available to help authors to do so.

HOW CAN OPEN ACCESS HELP END THE RECESSION?
