Millennium - A Whole New Way to Find What You Need!: Home

What is Millennium?

The Long Island University Libraries are implementing a library system, which will bring new experiences to finding and locating library collections and resources.

The traditional catalog, as well as the Encore discovery platform (with its Google-like search box and focus on user-centered design), will be available on the Library website. One of the most exciting features of the new system is the AirPAC, which brings the Library to your phone!

A core implementation team from the Brooklyn, Post and Brentwood campus libraries is working with the Innovative team to migrate the data and configure the new system. Various modules and products are being tested by faculty and staff from all LIU libraries.

Stay tuned!

Message from the Dean of University Libraries

Next spring, the Long Island University libraries will launch a brand new library system to help make finding and accessing the resources you need a whole lot easier. The new system is called "Millennium." You will still be able to search the library's catalog of books, and the library's databases, but the way you search will change. It will eventually be possible to conduct initial searches for books, journal articles, and other materials from one web-based interface. Our new system will also make "internal" processes, like keeping track of which materials are checked out, easier. The new system will be easy to use, fast, and we hope, fun! We have included a list of some descriptions of the various components of the system on this page, as well as links to some other libraries who use the same system so you can get a sense of what it will be like.

Right now, we are working to implement the new system. We will keep you posted as we move closer to a launch date. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Valeda Dent at valeda.dent@liu.edu.

Highlights

Millennium: An Integrated Library System, Millennium is used to manage and streamline library collections and operations. The system includes the following public and staff modules: library catalog (WebPAC Pro), cataloging, acquisitions, serials, circulation, and system administration.

WebPAC Pro: The traditional library catalog, known as OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). Most users are familiar with this public interface of the library system.

Encore: A discovery services tool, Encore overlays the OPAC, provides users with a Google-like search box that displays results in ways that today’s users can easily relate to. Leveraging Web 2.0 and social media technologies, Encore brings new experiences to finding information by including library services, digital collections, electronic books and journals, DVDs and videos, and other resources in a single search.

Other user-centered services and features: AirPAC (library catalog for mobile devices) and Single Sign-on (patron authentication without the need to use library barcode).

Milestones

Data: Extracted and Migrated - Bib, Item, Authority, Serials, Circulation, Patron, Course and Reserve (Sept. 2011-Jan. 2012)
